Our Team
John McElwee, DO
Co-Founder & Medical Director
Dr. McElwee was raised in Savannah, Georgia, where he developed a deep appreciation for community-centered, relationship-driven care. He attended Benedictine Military School before completing his undergraduate studies at Georgia Southern University.
He earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – Georgia and completed residency training at Coliseum Medical Centers in Macon, Georgia.
Dr. McElwee co-founded Low Country Recovery with his wife, April, with the shared goal of creating a practice rooted in thoughtful, physician-directed care. Together, they established a model that prioritizes individualized treatment planning, careful clinical oversight, and a measured approach to metabolic health.
Each patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation, and treatment decisions are guided by medical judgment, safety, and long-term health considerations. Through Low Country Recovery, Dr. McElwee provides telehealth-based care designed to be attentive, structured, and grounded in responsible medical practice.
April McElwee
Co-Founder & Brand Director
Low Country Recovery was inspired by April’s own pursuit of optimal health. During her journey, she recognized a distinct gap in the market — sophisticated, physician-led weight management that was both locally accessible and thoughtfully designed. She envisioned a practice that combined medical excellence with elevated patient experience.
Together with her husband, April co-founded Low Country Recovery to redefine what modern weight management could look and feel like: discreet, personalized, and rooted in clinical integrity.
As Brand Director, April oversees the strategic vision of LCR’s branding, marketing, and community presence. She ensures that every element of the patient experience reflects refinement, trust, and exceptional care. Her passion lies in cultivating meaningful relationships within the Savannah community while building a practice that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
As a husband-and-wife team, April and John are committed to delivering physician-led care in an environment that prioritizes discretion, professionalism, and long-term wellness.
